Human Rights in the Workplace

Have you experienced discrimination in the workplace?

You should know that this is not ok and you can take legal action to protect yourself!

Whether you are a potential employee and just went for an interview or you have been an employee with a company for a long time, you cannot be discriminated against based on any of the grounds covered by the Human Rights Code.

The protected grounds under the Human Rights Code are:

  • Age

  • Ancestry, colour, race

  • Citizenship

  • Ethnic origin

  • Place of origin

  • Creed

  • Disability

  • Family status

  • Marital status (including single status)

  • Gender identity, gender expression

  • Receipt of public assistance (in housing only)

  • Record of offences (in employment only)

  • Sex (including pregnancy and breastfeeding)

  • Sexual orientation

The nexus of a) a protected ground and b) a social area protected under the Code give a person who experienced discrimination grounds to make a complaint in the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. The social area in this instance is employment and the ground will vary depending on the specific nature of your complaint.
